Diaguitas, a little gem of the Elqui Valley

For those who have walked through the picturesque streets of the small town of Diaguitas, it will not be difficult to understand why this unique town in the Fourth Region is considered by the National Monuments Council as a traditional village of high heritage value.

The fusion between adobe masonry and the various artistic expressions displayed in its murals of pre-Hispanic cultures (Diaguita and Aymara) make this locality an unmissable place in the Elqui Valley.

Its history dates back to the year 1200 A.D., when this territory was inhabited by the Diaguita culture, which took advantage of the valley ravines to grow corn, gather fruits, and raise their animals.

Among the continuous façades that make up the town’s main street, the Church of Diaguitas stands out, located in front of the square. This church began construction in 1610 and had as its patron saint Our Lady of the Rosary.

In its streets, we can find beautiful replicas of Diaguita ceramics sold by artisans and local people.

All this, together with the kindness of the locals, the rich gastronomy, and the picturesque landscapes of the town, make Diaguitas an unmissable tourist stop in the Elqui Valley.
